Whether you’re a long-time entrepreneur or just getting started, you’ve probably experienced that dreaded burnout… Am I right? Let’s be honest, this is one of life’s biggest challenges as an entrepreneur! In fact, if you search for entrepreneur advice, one of the keywords that pops up is stress relief!
Entrepreneur Advice To Minimize Stress
Stress. It can be easy to fall victim to as an entrepreneur, between long hours and endless tasks you’ll often find yourself starting the day with goals in mind and then ending it wondering where all the time went. Stress no more! I feel ya, so I created a list of 10 ways to prevent this from taking over your day. There is a better way, I promise!
Eliminate Burnout
If you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably heard me talk about blogger burnout, or overwhelm often. And you’ve also probably heard me talk about how to de-stress so you can eliminate burnout and become more productive in the process! There’s actually a science behind this, and you can read more about that in this fascinating book called Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less here! It’s written by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang and delves deep into how active rest can create a more inspired, creative and productive mindset. Not overwork. That’s your goal, right?
Rest & Recharge To Boost Creativity
If you’re a creative entrepreneur you know all too well that creativity often comes in flow states. This is a time where your brain is inspired and creating a massive amount of ideas at once. Sometimes you’ll also wonder why the heck you can’t create one darn thing! The truth, and science, is that your brain most easily enters these creative flows when you’ve allowed it to rest properly. Let’s just be clear, by rest I do not mean sleep! Or watching tv, or reading a book. I mean actively disengaging. Think: watching a sunset, drinking a glass of wine in the shade on a summer evening, hiking, surfing … basically anything that lets your mind wander.
Reduce Stress to Increase Creative Ideas
Those are the times that your mind is most active. Please re-read that last sentence! The times your brain is creating the most, is most inspired and solving problems at a rapid pace (without you even knowing) is when you are not at your desk! It’s when you’re not trying to create, solve problems or produce any kind of work period! You’re brain is literally most active when you are at rest.
Research Proven
Yes, MRI’s prove this to be true. The mind’s of people at rest are more active than those at work. So, the next time you start to feel even the slightest twinge of overwhelm, exhaustion, burnout or other similar feeling make note and stop what you’re doing to rest. It’s your brains way of telling you (begging you) to take a much needed break. It’s your brains way of saying, hey – I can’t solve (insert problem) or create (insert blog post) or edit (insert photograph) until you give me some time off!
Boost Problem-Solving
Once you take a moment, or a few hours (even days) to be more precise, to disengage and allow your mind to wander your body will to begin to rest and recharge too. Then, and only then, when you return to your desk you’ll notice your mind is exceptionally efficient and inspired. While at rest you’ll likely also notice you’re suddenly flooded with amazing ideas and solutions to problems you’ve been trying to solve. Without even trying to do so!
How To Minimize Burnout to Increase Happiness, Creativity & More: The Ultimate List
Like I mentioned above, I created a list of 10 ways you can easily disengage, de-stress and recharge. Remember, sleep just won’t cut it! And, listen, I get it. It can be incredibly hard as an entrepreneur to step away from your desk and (gasp) take a break! I’ve been there, the 12+ hour days, the sleepless nights, the zombie-like appearance … it’s all too common. Overwork is sadly the norm in so many societies. But, the moment I realized just how much those long days were hurting my business, I stopped. After studying psychology for 8 years in college, I know first-hand how easily people get burnt out, and just how easily stress can be managed.
I also am highly aware of how proper self-care can boost anyone’s productivity and creativity.
Schedule Time-Off
So, now I take 2 days off a week to recharge and flat-out end my workday after 6 hours at my desk. The result? I am highly productive when I get to my desk and produce far more in less time than I ever did working 12+ hour days! You can achieve the same results too.
Maximize Brainpower
Think about it this way. Do you think for a second that writers or artists chain themselves to a laptop or mural for 8 hours a day, consistently between 9am-5pm? Not likely, right? They instead “create” when the inspiration comes, and produce massive works of art in very short periods of time! This is your flow state, and it’s truly what we all should be striving for as entrepreneurs of any business, because entrepreneurs are highly creative too.
